Bountiful Baskets Review: Is a Product Co Op Worth It?

Bountiful Baskets, Vegas Blog, Vegas Family

For the last few months, I have been a regular contributor of a produce cooperative called Bountiful Baskets. On Monday afternoon, I log onto their website, pick my location and make my selections for that week. And then I wait. By the time Saturday morning finally arrives, I am SO excited to find out what kind of yummy goodness is in store for me. More often than not, however, I check out their Facebook Page where members from earlier time zones will post pictures of their bounties.

Bountiful Baskets

This week for my Bountiful Baskets I ordered my regular conventional basket. A 100% organic option is available for $10 extra on week B. They always offer add-ons as well. This week they had an Italian pack, raw honey, 30lb case of apples, and 2lbs of tropical granola. Last week was a Mexican pack, 25lbs of asparagus, some cool breads and other stuff I can’t remember. However, the one added offering I do order is their 9-grain bread, which comes in a pack of 5 decent sized loaves for $10. It is delicious, freezes beautifully and has no preservatives.

Here is the ingredient list published by Bountiful Baskets of the bread:

Ingredients: Wheat Flour, Organic Whole Grain Wheat Flour, Water, Honey, Rye Flakes, Barley, Oats, Vital wheat gluten, cracked wheat, corn, rye, millet, flax seed, sea salt, yeast.  Contains: Wheat

I usually order the 9-grain pack only once every 2/3 weeks, which means I never run out of bread. Or fruit. Or veggies. Which is a HUGE reason why I participate in the co-op to begin with….we always have fresh produce on hand and not a single reason why it should be missing from our daily diet. Also, my baby is guaranteed a variety of fruits to snack on. Just today she’s had a kiwi and some pineapple, but it’s the pear that has captured her heart.

So for one week’s bundle that’s green leaf lettuce, a bunch of spinach, a bunch of asparagus, 3 mini butternut squash, too many green chilies, some apples, a bag of pears, lots of kiwis, a thing of tomato, oranges, 2 huge Asian pears, and an entire pineapple!

Seasonal Vegetables

The winter has been full of fabulous squash…we’ve had butternut squash, acorn squash, a type of Japanese squash that I can’t remember the name. We’ve had pumpkins and mini pumpkins. All the squash have been processed as baby food for my daughter and she loves them.

Another reason to love a co-op: healthy, fresh and delicious baby food.

Bountiful Baskets Examples

This week’s bounty is packed with yummy stuff that I will be happy to use all week. We got a new radish, the Japanese Daikon radish. I love that Bountiful Baskets helps me learn about veggies I would normally not use in my kitchen.

This week’s haul was awesome! I was concerned that with grocery prices increasing, we would start noticing a decrease in the volume of produce. I thought that maybe last week we started to see the effect, especially with the vegetable bounty, but that wasn’t the case.
