Hot Chocolate is synonymous with holiday cheer and in our Latino household, added spice brings warmth and tradition. As the weather cools, we look to our favorite recipes to bring nostalgia. And you can’t have the holidays without our favorite Abuelita hot chocolate recipe! Making Mexican Hot Chocolate was already planned on our advent calendar and my toddler was so excited to make this simple recipe on the sixth day of Christmas. This Mexican hot chocolate recipe an easy recipe for kids to help with, so grad these few ingredients and get ready to make some holiday memories.

Mexican Hot Chocolate

Mexican hot chocolate differs from the traditional hot cocoa because of the spices infused, giving it a sophisticated, spicy kick. It’s so yummy to us, but kids accustomed to very sweet hot chocolate might not like it as much. I invite you to give it a try next time you are snuggling on the couch with your loves this winter.

This hot chocolate recipe doesn’t get any easier when you use Mexican chocolate, like these Abuelita tablets, to simplify the process. Abuelita is made by Nestle, a family-known company, and Abuelita has gained a bunch of popularity here in the states since I was a kid. Abuelita Chocolate Tablets

This is what the chocolat tables look like – granular and gritty. The chocolate is spiced with cinnamon and has a gritty texture because of it and the density of the dark cocoa. When you melt the chocolate into milk you end up with a cup of festive goodness.

Chop the tablet down into smaller chunks and melt into 4 cups of low-fat milk on the stove top on low. Let your toddler and young kids help! Take your time whisking while singing Christmas songs, creating memories in the kitchen and passing down traditions. Once the milk starts to froth.

For a sweeter chocolate flavor, add 1/2 cup of milk chocolate chips. We love our Abuelita Hot Chocolate the way it is, but if your Mexican Style Hot Coco isn’t sweet enough add more milk chocolate or sugar to taste. Top with marshmallows and you’re done!

Nonetheless, my little bicultural Latina loved her Mexican Hot Chocolate, although not soo hot. We had to let our coco cool down before indulging in our yummy recipe. After putting the baby down, we spent the evening snuggled up watching the classic Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer and enjoying our delicious homemade hot chocolate.

Abuelita Hot Chocolate Recipe

Mexican hot chocolate differs from the traditional hot cocoa because of the spices infused, giving it a sophisticated, spicy kick. Using a few simple ingredienets, this Abuelita hot chocolate recipe is so easy a toddler can make it!

Ingredients

  • 1 Tablet of Abuelita Mexican Chocolate
  • 4 cups milk

Instructions

Chop the chocolate tablet down into smaller chunks.

Pour milk into saucepan on stove top on low heat.

Whisk until the chocolate has completely dissolved into the milk.

Let it cool to taste before serving.

    Drinking Chocolate Abuelita is one of my boys favorite, especially with some pan dulce. We love to cuddle on the couch too! It also reminds me of my grandparents!

    Mexican Hot Choc is my absolute fave! I’m such a hot Choc snob and I have to find really great tasting quality ingredients and I have to agree…for store bought Abueluta is the best! And super easy to make. Though I prefer the one you mentioned vs the packets as it has better taste to me. We always put ours in the blender as well to give it a good mix and make it a bit frothy. Thanks for sharing your holiday traditions!
