Reading With Las Vegas’s Mayor Goodman

Our local library hosted The Fratello Marionettes from San Fransisco for an exciting puppet show featuring three classic storybook tales: The Three Little Pigs, The Tortoise and the Hare, and The Ugly Duckling. I was excited to share it with my Vegas blog readers. I had also promised Alina that we would attend, so when we all started suffering from allergies over the weekend, I just figured we would miss out.

Think again. This kid doesn’t forget anything you tell her, and since she was on the mend {my baby boy wasn’t so lucky}, we braved the library to attend their special summer reading program kick off event…

And I am so glad we did! As we arrived, I noticed the parking lot was unusually packed, even for a special event like the one we were attending. Once I saw the line coming out the library doors, I knew something was up. Luckily, Alina’s favorite librarian came to our rescue and ushered us to the front. I was baby wearing Sebastian, so I’m sure she just took pity on me.

As she led me to the front of the giant crowd, she turned around and said “the Mayor is coming, that’s why it’s so busy.”

COMO SAY WHaaaT?

Look! It’s Alina and the Mayor! Haha!

Now, I’m no political junkie, but I was a political science major in college. I appreciate the inner workings of our government, am knowledgeable of how our local government functions on a very superficial level and take any opportunity I can to see/hear the political heavy hitters of my area.

How bummed was I that I didn’t have my camera on hand?! Sorry for the low lighting and crappy camera phone.

Mayor Carolyn Goodman became the mayor of Las Vegas just last year, winning 60% of the local vote. She is actually the wife of our former mayor, Oscar Goodman, who was quite beloved in this crazy town for his crazy photos with martinis and showgirls. After his twelve years of service, he administered the oath of office to his wife of then 49 years. Good ‘ol Oscar called her while she was reading books to the kids, and after she rejected his call, she said she could do that because they had been married 50 years already. Ha!

Like so many politicians and their schedules, Mayor Goodman was running late after the puppet show so much of the gathering has dessipated. I’m so happy we stayed behind for this Monday afternoon treat!

Alina’s favorite part of the whole thing? Snuggling with Miss Leah, of course…

Happy Monday!

  1. Very, very, very cool!

  2. I’m so glad Alina is feeling better and that she stayed awake for your library visit! After your recent photos of her falling asleep in so many places I thought this might be a post about her napping during the mayor’s presentation ;-)

Very exciting that the mayor visited for summer reading and that you got to see her! I am so impressed that she and her husband 1. have given so much back to their community by being in the mayor’s office and 2. have been married for 50 years! What an accomplishment!

  3. Better start bringing that camera everywhere! Or get a phone with a kick-butt camera. Hey! You need to keep the flip in your diaper bag…take video and HD stills.
