Teach Kids to Grow an Indoor Garden: AeroGarden 3SL Update

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I was on the hunt for holiday gift ideas that exposed the kids to a skill set or experience. As a Walmart Mom, I was sent an AeroGarden 3SL and wondered if you could teach kids to grow a garden indoors? The answer is yes! Here’s an update to how our little herb garden is doing in the AeroGarden 3SL…

Walmart’s Exclusive AeroGarden 3SL

There is obviously no replacement of growing a real-deal garden in the dirt and sunshine, but for those of us who either don’t have the most time or space to dig up a traditional garden, the AeroGarden 3SL is such a great alternative.

Setting up the indoor garden was so easy and only took about 4 steps from start to finish. Because of the technologies, the AeroGarden doesn’t require extra soil. With plenty of water and plant nutrients (of which the manual explains exactly how much of each your plants will need), the AeroGarden uses a timer to determine how much light your plants need to thrive. A little red light also alerts you when more liquid plant food it needed. Top your little seedlings with a plant dome, and you and the kids are ready to sit back and watch as your indoor garden germinate.

Over 19 days, our herb indoor garden went from nothing to various, germinated herbs. We’ve had to add more plant food and increase the light base a few notches, but other than that, it’s been very easy. It’s pretty incredible! And for my young kids, their AeroGarden 3SL indoor herb garden has been like a magic trick. Mix a little seed pods, light and water, with a little patience and you’ll be cooking with home grown herbs in no time.

The AeroGarden 3Sl does a geat job at educating us on what to expect with our plants, informing us of how long each plan will take to sprout and how tall we can expect it to grow. Thank goodness it did, because I was worried the curly parsley wasn’t going to make. Luckily, I listened to the professionals and the kids and I were ecstatic to wake up one morning and see the little sprout emerge.

Although there are different models, this AeroGarden model is exclusive to Walmart. I love it because it’s sleek design is great for any room in the house – including the kids’ bedroom! You can buy all sorts of pods for your indoor garden, including lettuces and vegetables.

The Miracle-Gro AeroGarden 3SL might be a nontraditional holiday gift, but I still think it’s a great one. I would have been excited to get one as a kid and, for those moms without a green thumb, its a great way to learn from gardening without too much of the stress of keeping one.
