The Ridiculous Going Home Outfit

Ok. So I’m a bit ridiculous. I realize this. I am also fully aware that ya’ll love me despite my ridiculousness.  Thank you so very much. But C’MON!!! Who doesn’t love to dress up a tiny baby girl as if she were a doll? Ok ok, so I know lots of people that wouldn’t dress their newborn infant in yards of tulle and lace. There is an element of torture there, I suppose. But C’mon!!! The clothes are so cute! And I’m Cuban…which makes me a tad crazy, and most certainly over-the-top. So when it was time to take Alina home from the hospital, all the fru-fru naysayers were ousted from earshot. Alina was adorned in a carefully planned out outfit, complete with matching shoes and accessories, upon taking her first adventure into the world.

What can I say… I’m ridiculous. And guess what? You love me :)

Alina’s Going Home Outfit consisted of a tutu ballerina onesie, tights, hair band and matching shoes. And although sized for a newborn, she was swimming in it all. Even the headband didn’t fit her head. I had purchased everything months in advance, carefully hung it all in her nursery so that I can stare at the ensemble and dream about the tiny infant that would one day bring the fabric to life. Even now, over two years later, looking at this picture below brings me chills. Isn’t she perfect?!

And because Alina was born in the winter {and because I’m not THAT ridiculous}, the headband was switched out for a more reasonable beanie to keep her tiny head warm. Her beautiful ballerina tutu was covered in a handmade blanket that was crocheted with love especially for Alina by her Grammy. This is technically how Alina left the hospital that happy day…

Once we were home, where it was warm and cozy, Alina the Ballerina made her appearance again. {Sidenote: have you ever seen a kid change so much from when she was a newborn?! My little two year old beauty looks nearly nothing like the tiny newborn below. But I promise you, it is the same baby! Ha!}

Not long after finding out our second child would be a boy, I set out looking for the perfect Going Home Outfit. I was tempted to simply throw on a cute onesie, a hat, and call it a day. Afterall, although I can doll up a girl like nobody’s business, I am not too familiar with fancy boywear. But, how can I put so much love and attention into Alina’s first world appearance and not my son’s? Even if it took some research, I was determined to figure something out. Ridiculousness being the top priority.
Here are some ideas of what I have in mind…

  1. I always wanted a really beautiful going home outfit for a little girl, and I have to admit, my boys didn’t really get all that dressed up for the occasion. But at the time, I was just so smitten with their cute little onsies they had that to me it was perfect and cute and adorable and all that. I knitted a special beanie for Jordan and Adrian got to wear it too, but I can’t even remember if Eli wore it out of the hospital, but part of me thinks that as soon as we left the air con building, it had to come off. I’m not even sure if it’s still in wearable condition for this next little man. I’ve got some of his clothes all ready to go, but haven’t worked out where to put the rest so haven’t had a look at the state that they are in.

    Can’t wait to see what gorgeous outfit your little man
