Curly Hair Buns: Sock Bun Tutorial for Girls Hairstyles

Sock buns are super popular and, making sure my daughter’s curly hair stays healthy is a high priority. This curly girls hairstyle is kid-approved and that means it’s trendy, cute and comfortable. The bun sock is all the rave, but figuring out how to create a hair bun on very textured hair took some practice.

We Love Curly Hair Buns!

So, what exactly is a sock bun you ask? Sock buns are a hairstyle using a donut bun sponge to create a classy, little girl hairstyle that can be used as a high or low bun. It’s great for buns for curly hair because of the structure the donut provides. It’s easy to create and can have a messy or pulled-together look. This is how we did it!

Sock Bun for Curly Hair Kids

To get started, I followed our regular curly mixed hair care routine that packs in the moisture the night before. Our night time routine helps protect the curl pattern. Perhaps brushing the hair out will minimize the pattern in this style, but we don’t own a brush 🙂

What You’ll Need for Sock Buns:

Hair Bun Sponge: I was wondering where to buy sock bun stuff and eventually found the perfect hair bun maker to use on my daughter’s head. I got it in brown to match her hair color. I’ve seen people use t-shirts to make a small hair donut, but using an actual bun sponge was MUCH easier.

A hair bun maker is definitely important, but so are your other tools!

Curly Hair Products + Tools: Some kind of gel or styler, boar brush, elastic bands, bobby pins

Using a Bun Donut

First, you’ll want to make sure the water is moisturized and clean for optimal shine. Add a bit of gel on the top of the head and use the boar brush to create a sleek look. This will also help to tame fly away at the hairline.

Side note: We did not use a boar brush on this final look!

Next, pull hair through the sock bun and position to where you want the bun to sit. I wanted to place it on top of her head, which would be utterly on trend, but she wanted nothing to do with that. We compromised at a slight side, lower bun. I think it turned out pretty cute!

Fold hair over the scrunchie to create a bun shape and smooth out the hair. Apply elastic band around the bun.

Wrap the rest of the hair around the bun and tuck it in or apply bobby pins if desired.
