Pretty Side Banded Ponytail: Curly Mixed Hairstyles

Did you know summer months can wreak havoc on curly mixed hair? The kids are more active, sweating and playing in chlorinated water, causing you to shampoo it more. Excessive shampooing can make the hair dry and cause breakage. It’s tough! Biracial hair (and curly hair, in general) requires lots of moisture. Summer months can make it difficult to maintain.

These curly mixed hairstyles that will help protect biracial hair from drying out during the hot summer months. Nourishing products, like Johnson’s No More Tangle’s Detangling spray, helps you style hair while keeping moisture in. Using Johnson’s No More Tangles regime, I wanted to create a pretty curly hairstyle that my little princess loved while also keeping her hair nourished during fun, active summer days.

To start, and before styling, I washed Alina’s hair with Johnson’s No More Tangles 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner for thick/curly hair. I like it for a few reasons. First, the price point is awesome. I use intensive deep conditioners on her hair, so it’s nice to give my pocket book a break on shampoo. Second, it’s tear free and doesn’t dry out Alina’s mixed hair. It’s also paraben-free, phthalate-free and triclosan-free. After using the No More Tangles shampoo, her hair is squeaky clean, but not breaking apart clean. Third, it gets her hair much more clean than a standard co-wash does. And for her wild, summer escapades, her hair needs it!

After shampooing, I follow my regular mixed hair care routine for super hydrated ringlet curls.

Step by Step Curly Hairstyles: Side Banded Ponytail

*Excuse me while I do some deep breathing. When did my baby grow into such a tall, beautiful girl?! Gosh, that happened overnight.*

You’ll need a parting comb, Johnson’s No More Tangles Leave-In Conditioner (to help add/lock in moisture and better manage the hair while styling), bright colored, small rudder bands (I like the ones below because I can cut them out when taking the style out. Be careful not to create hair breakage by using these!) and Johnson’s Detangling Spray to help style on second/third days.

– Using the parting comb, make a deep part at the hairline and connect to hair on right (or left) ear. Use the comb to smooth the hair down, adding the leave-in condition as you go to ensure proper moisture. Tie it together with a small band.

– Part out small sections, from side to side, banding as you go. As a tip, comb out tangles section by section instead of all at once, moving down the ponytail. Similarly, smooth out the sections as you go. As a personal preference, I did not want to pull too tightly on my daughter’s scalp and, thus, wasn’t too worried about the hair looking completely flat (or straight). The wave and texture of her hair is all natural, and doesn’t bother me. By keeping the sections small, we were able to create an elongated ponytail that Alina loved!

– Join each section with the one above, like you would a French braid. Keep detangling the hair with the comb or your fingers as you go, smoothing the hair with the comb before you band until you’ve reached the end of the hair.

I really loved the banded ponytail ending with her beautiful curls in a low ponytail (as seen in the first picture of this post above). I thought it was a beautiful combination of healthy maintenance for active days, yet still showcased her gorgeous curls. However, Alina LOVED this long ponytail. It made her feel like a princess! And, in reality, keeping it banded all the way down definitely helps to keep the hair healthy and protected.

We kept this curly hairstyle in for 2/3 days. I was shocked at how well is held up after sleeping on it. We only needed a bit of No More Tangle’s Detangling Spray and combing to smooth down the edges to get the style refreshed for another day.

I know your daughter is is not 9/10 but I have a question? How would you style at 9/10 or as they get older for biracial hair types?Currently she uses a soy leave in conditioner and color safe conditioner for her highlights and herbal essense conditioner and wet it on dry days to brush it our and comb it generally with a narrow toothed comb.Need some suggestions because I usually braid it fro her upon request.I oily curly hair she on the other hand has thick fine curly hair which can be a task to make it through.

Hi Cole, thanks for the note! For a 9/10 year old, I would use more protective styles for school and sports, etc. Also, styles that can be freshened up and kept in for a couple days would be great – banded ponytails, twist outs that then can let out on day 3/4 for a new look. Regardless of age, I think keeping hair moisturized is the most important factor.

Hi! My 14 year old daughter loves and hates her hair! I know kinda strange but she always comes to me with knew products saying “We have to try this mom!” Or “We have to try this!” She always comes to me because whenever we decide for her to wear her hair down it starts off past her shoulders then it Springs up to her ears in less than an hour. We can never have it as beautiful as your daughters hair. So I’m asking, what would you do for your 14 year old high school student who constantly feels judged about how her hair looks and how the other girls hair look. Please, what products should be good for her hair? Thanks! (P.S. Her hair is just like your daughters.)

    Hello Vanessa,
I’m so thankful that I found your website. I have a 3 year old son and I wish I could upload pictures of his hair so you could see it! Its very similar to your daughters except its lighter in color like a blondish reddish color and my struggle with his hair is.. It always looks dry, no matter what I put on it. I wash with carols daughter “biotin” shampoo and sometimes the Johnson’s and John’s extra moisture shampoo. I use the carol’s daughter conditioner and also a leave in conditioner, his hair still requires extra moisture for whatever reason. I use the shea moisture line on his hair and I’m not that impressed with it, but its the best I have used thus far. I’m so open to suggestion from you. Could I please send you a picture of his hair so you can see exactly what I’m talking about??? I noticed you have a little boy as well, what do you put on his hair? Noah’s(my son) hair is very curly and beautiful I just need more moisture.
    Please help!

I forgot to mention his hair is cork screw ringlets, I don’t think Noah has one straight piece of hair. I do notice his hair is more coarse in the middle of his hair, then the front and the back of his hair is very fine. The middle of his hair is also where I’m experiencing the most dryness. Even leave in conditioners leave it dry? Is this because he’s a boy and I’m not putting it in pony tails or braids? Part of me wonders if its because as soon as I wash it he’s off playing or wrestling with the dog on the floor and could care less about his hair. Also what do you do for the summers for little boys? The sweat a lot… and my son wears a hat at school to keep the dirt and sand out when they play outdoors.

Hi my friends daughter Aaliyah is staying with me till she graduates from high school. She is 17 and still needs help with her hair. She actually tried to brush it today. It doesn’t work. I was using a large tooth comb or pick to help her. I noticed that her ends are not moisturized. Can I get her a hot oil treatment for her hair? Her hair is down to the middle of her back. She has amazing curls. So glad I found this will show it to her when she gets home from school. I am just wondering what she is going to do when she goes to college.

I love this style, and while my 5 yr old girls curls are not as tight as yours, I think it will look cute. This has become my new site to go to for dealing with my little girls bi-racial hair. I think her texture is trying to change, and she wants to leave it down, and with your deep conditioning tips on the other post I think we have some new styles and new ways of doing hair. That was a little rambling wasn’t it. sorry, but thanks!

[…] This hairstyle is great for keeping short bangs in check. You’ll need several elastics but the process is easy to understand. Start with a small amount of hair in one front ponytail, then simply gather a little more hair with each ponytail. Once you get to the base of the head, elastics are just added along a single ponytail to create little “puffs” that match the rest of the banded ponytail hairstyle. […]
