Teach Kids to Sew with Top Toy: Sew Cool Machine

I don’t own a sewing machine. I do, though, remember stitching small projects by hand with my great-grandmother and the bonding we experienced during that time. I would love to teach my kids to sew and experience those special moments of creation, too!

This year, I’ll be testing out a few of the top toys and the Sew Cool Machine actually teaches kids the principles of sewing. So is this toy deserving of the Top Toy status? Here’s what I think…

Sew Cool

In terms of creative toys to introduce girls (and boys!) to practical skills, the Spin Master Sew Cool Machine gets my full approval. I absolutely love that this top toy pulls from kid’s desire to create unique expressions of self into a skill-set they can use all their lives. For many of our kids, sewing might be something they would never otherwise be introduced to (cheap clothes and accessories are so accessible nowadays!), but the Sew Cool Machine makes it easy and fun for parents to bring sewing into their homes.

The Sew Cool Machine is ready to go straight out of the box. 4 AA batteries are needed, but the thread-less machine is ready to start sewing your little one’s creations. The sewing needle is protected under a thick plastic covering, making moms feel safer.

In the box, you’ll find the sewing machine, pre-cut projects, stuffing, embellishments, and extra fabric to create your own designs. (See picture below for all the things that come included in this top toy.)

The instructions are easy enough to follow. Start at one dot, end at the second. The machine doesn’t pull the fabric, making it necessary to push it along. The string doesn’t tangle or knot, nor do you have a thread anything, making simple projects like a stuffed cupcake pillow minutes from start to finish. The embellishments are super easy to attach, just a few quick stitches, and add endless opportunities for personalization.

I love this little toy for so many reasons, least of which because it’s educational. The Sew Cool Machine offers moms the opportunity to chat with their kids about a skill they love or perhaps open the door to learning a new one! The products say that the toy is meant for kids 6 and older, and I agree. My little one is only 4 years old, and although she’ll be five very soon, I still think she’s a bit too young to really enjoy this toy to its potential. The fine motor skills needed to push the fabric along the line are a bit advanced for my little girl, so we decided to wrap up the gift for a cousin who can help Alina play with it when they’re together.

Sew Cool Machine is SO Cool!

For about $30, this toy is definitely a top contender for kids 6 and up. I love that it’s actually a hands-on activity and promotes self-expression.
