DIY Mid Century Modern Planter: A New Take On An Old Classic

We recently bought a tiny, mid century modern cottage here in California and I’m having a blast designing our new space. The aesthetics are different from what I’m initially drawn too, but I like learning about a new genre of design and blending my favorite aspects with our existing stuff. Since our house was built in the 1950’s, the mid-century modern feel will run throughout our home’s interior.

We’ve had this plain, brown planter for years and it works great for our Fiddle Leaf Fig. The shape was great and, while it’s way too big to elevate on a base, I wondered if a mid century modern inspired DIY could make it cool again. I’m excited to partner with Walmart on this DIY, especially since I got all my materials there and at great prices.

You hear it all the time, but wow, spray paint really does wonders. I’m so happy we didn’t throw out this planter that we’ve had for years. It’s a great size and the self watering feature is one of my favorites, but the color needed an update. You can find an affordable version at Walmart, along with all the supplies needed for this DIY Mid Century Modern Planter.

For this project, I used a metallic gold spray paint, as well as a high gloss black and white spray paint. To create the crisp lines, though, you should try Painter’s Frog Tape. It’s made for multi-surfaces and was gentle on the new paint I applied it on. Definitely a must-have on your list for DIY projects!

Creating this Mid Century Modern inspired planter was super easy and affordable. After spray painting the entire planter with one layer of white, I simply taped each section off, applying construction paper to keep the clean lines, and spray painted the top and bottom layers. I added a second white coat in the middle for good measure.

Per the instructions, I removed the tape immediately after painting and allowed to dry completely before handling. Have a small paint brush near by to paint small areas that might need cleaning up.

I’m so happy with the finished results! With just a bit of time and effort, this old planter has a new life in our old, mid century cottage. But man, that fireplace needs a good cleaning and paint, too! I found this high heat spray paint while checking out Walmart’s DIY Projects website, so that’s next on my list of things to do.

Home improvements never end!
